A funded professional workplace training programme for developing highly competent traffic operators. Candidates will undertake the online Operators Licence Awareness Training (OLAT) course as part of the apprenticeship. Available for staff of any age.
About the course
This level 2 apprenticeship, developed by RHA in partnership with TRS, delivers the essential skills needed by logistics firms to facilitate growth and success.
The apprenticeship takes 12 months and empowers candidates to assist traffic teams by ensuring the accurate flow of information for the movement of goods and timely deliveries for diverse clients. On completion, candidates can coordinate daily operations, support drivers, and liaise with stakeholders while maintaining compliance with transportation regulations.
As part of the apprenticeship, candidates will complete the RHA’s online Operators Licence Awareness Training (OLAT) course.
What’s included?
Traffic operator apprentices will develop professional skills and competence in areas that include:
- Compliance with legislation to maintain health, safety, and security.
- Planning and issuing timely documents and instructions.
- Allocating vehicles for maintenance, collaborating with colleagues.
- Planning routes for safe, fuel-efficient product delivery.
- Selecting vehicles considering access, route, cost, and efficiency.
- Allocating resources considering sustainability and organisational use.
- Monitoring job progress, communicating with colleagues and customers.
- Provide briefings for effective shift handover and prioritisation.
- Manage complaints for effective resolution and brand protection
Who are TRS?
Our training partner, TRS, will work with you to develop a bespoke training plan that provides the exact skills your company requires. They then deliver the apprenticeship training to a mutually agreed timetable that fits around working schedules, individually supporting each participant from start to completion.
TRS is the AELP/FE Week logistics apprenticeship provider of 2024 and is rated excellent by employers for its apprenticeships.

Who is eligible?
The Traffic Operator apprenticeship is available to both levy-paying and non-levy-paying businesses based in England only (it is not available in Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland). Please get in touch to see what is available for businesses outside England.
How is it funded?
This apprenticeship is available to employers at little or no cost. The government funds 95% of the apprenticeship for small and medium businesses that do not pay the apprenticeship levy. Larger firms that pay the levy can meet 100% of the costs using their levy funds. The OLAT course is included at no cost.
