Tachograph changes enforcement - two major updates

20 Dec 2024 Posted By Joe Scotting

The RHA has been notified of two updates to enforcement to hauliers using analogue or first generation (G1) smart tachographs.

UK hauliers making international deliveries to the EU including the Republic of Ireland are required to retrofit their vehicles with Gen II Smart tachographs by 31 December 2024.

DVSA confirmed that the UK/Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland Governments will not be enforcing these new rules on load bearing HGVs between the two countries until 31 March 2025.

Hauliers who cross the internal Irish border when in transit to a place of delivery (when no other collection/delivery is made) will not have any enforcement issued against them prior to this new deadline.

The retrofit will still need to take place by 31 December 2024. Operators using newer Gen I Smart Tacho have until 18 August 2025 to fit necessary upgrades to Gen II Smart Tacho. There will be no change to tachograph requirements for UK domestic hauliers.

Additionally, the European Commission has confirmed that EU hauliers retrofitting vehicles with analogue or G1 tachographs for journeys between EU member states has been postponed to 28 February 2025.

This follows a decision by the EU Commission’s Road Transport Committee to allow operators extra time to meet Smart Tachograph Version 2 requirements.
